Intravia, 2012–2014
Walk-performance

Description:

Consisting of a three-hour night-time route around Collserola Woods (Barcelona), Intravia was organised into twelve sessions for fifteen people, who had to register in advance. An unknown natural space, a culturally intervened space, and each person's own mental space all became scene and player at once. The limits of perception, the symbolic construction of place, and the physical experience of it operated as both stimuli and obstacles. Tinged with ritualistic significance, a dialogue was established between the audience, the environment, and the artistic intervention. Participants were guided by a protocol announced at the starting point, which set out the different stages, formats for interaction and tempos of the route.

Committed to autonomy in managing his formula and discourse, Ortín Castellví closes his cycle of works connected to this particular place with this project. At the same time, he opens up new channels for his personal approach to nature. His artistic meditation is ecologically ethical, but not driven by ecological protest. It blends experience and intellect through bodily adaptation to the architecture of the natural environment.

This is an 'animal approach to landscape' as a cultural phenomenology that eschews hackneyed concepts such as bucolic romanticism and the preciousness of landscape in favour of real experimentation through intimacy.
